For many people, chronic low back pain can be distressing and debilitating. For those whose livelihood relies on their physical mobility, it can also potentially be career ending.
But there’s hope, according to a recently published study out of the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. In a randomized clinical trial of 75 postal employees with chronic low back pain, naturopathic care beat out physiotherapy exercises in efficacy for pain management, range of motion, and weight loss. The naturopathic therapies used in the trial included dietary counseling, deep breathing relaxation techniques and acupuncture.
Naturopathic interventions can provide some much needed relief from not only back pain, but other joint and muscle pain, overuse injuries, migraines, arthritis, sports-related injuries, fibromyalgia, and more. Your naturopath will look at ways to reduce inflammation in the body – like certain nutritional therapies or at-home supportive lifestyle changes. He or she may recommend natural herbal painkillers or supplemental methods of increasing circulation, renewing your joints or relaxing your muscles. And naturopathic doctors are fully trained in acupuncture, an eastern therapy that has been used to manage pain and heal injuries for over 2500 years.
