Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are delayed reactions that occur in response to eating certain foods. Consumption of trigger foods can cause digestive discomforts like gas, bloating, constipation, or loose stools. Continued exposure can make these symptoms chronic, and has been associated with fatigue, headaches and migraines, difficulty with weight loss, and eczema.

When you consume foods to which you are sensitive, your immune system binds to the food particles in the blood stream, creating an IgG complex. A healthy immune system can often remove small quantities of these complexes with little consequence. But if you keep eating the offending food(s), the immune system can’t work fast enough, and it becomes overwhelmed, causing symptoms like those mentioned above. As well, the overwhelmed immune system is less able to defend against germs and you might notice difficulty fighting off the bugs that come your way.

The naturopathic doctors at Healing Path can use blood tests or experimental diet changes to help you determine which foods are causing your reactions. They will coach you in dietary changes to help you remove the offending foods and recommend supplements to help restore your digestive health. Many patients find that after this repair, they can go back to enjoying moderate amounts of the “offending foods” without any of the negative symptoms they used to experience.
