Philip had been experiencing bloating, gas and constipation, and occasional bouts of diarrhea, for several months. He eventually went to his medical doctor after googling his symptoms and getting quite anxious. “I was very concerned that it was cancer but thankfully all the medical tests came back normal” said Philip. It turns out that Philip had Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). He came to Healing Path on his doctor’s suggestion. “I was very reactive to the prescription medication that my doctor offered, so she thought it was time to see a naturopath”.
After a careful initial intake, and a review of the lab test results, Philip’s naturopathic doctor (ND) provided recommendations that offered him some much needed relief. He started with some well-targeted probiotics and fermented foods to help rebuild his gut microflora after a lifetime of antibiotic use. “I didn’t realize that antibiotics were having such a negative impact on my gut.” commented Philip. Next, through some additional testing, it was discovered that Philip was sensitive to soy and tomatoes. Philip and his ND came up with a nutritional strategy to gradually remove these foods with minimal disruption to his busy life.
After a few more visits working on his health through nutritional and herbal support, Philip felt ready to look more closely into his anxious tendency which was also affecting his digestion. His ND suggested mindfulness meditation and Philip was keen. His ND offered some ongoing training and encouragement and developed a daily mindfulness meditation plan for Philip. Says Philip, “I’m just a beginner at meditation but I’m already seeing some progress.”
