The number of patients seeking healthcare for mental illness is astounding. One in five Canadians suffer from mental illness at some point in their life, most commonly anxiety and/or depression. The use of antidepressants in Canada is at 9% of the population, the third highest rate in the Western World, according to a survey by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Antidepressants are being prescribed for not only depression, but increasingly for anxiety disorders as well.
For people who are suffering with anxiety or depression, naturopathic medicine can complement or provide an alternative to antidepressants. When Erin walked into a naturopathic office for the first time, she was feeling desperate. Her lifelong struggle with social anxiety seemed to be getting worse and she was showing signs of depression. She had recently lost her job and was finding it harder to leave the house. The feelings of isolation and loneliness left her questioning her ability to cope.
In order to best help Erin, her naturopath (ND) first referred her to a psychotherapist for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. With this plan in place, Erin’s ND prescribed a combination of herbal medicine and supplements that supported a more balanced biochemistry, but that did not interact with her current prescription medications. On her next naturopathic visit, Erin reported that she was beginning to feel a bit better. She was encouraged to go for walks outdoors and she was soon able to manage a regular exercise program. Her ND provided a number of acupuncture treatments, while she continued her supplement protocol. Six weeks later, Erin was ready to reintegrate back into the workforce.
