In Finland, you’ll find a sauna in almost every house. In fact, 99% of the population take at least one sauna per week. So … what do the Finns know that we don’t?

Saunas can provide substantial health benefits. For example:

  • Saunas enhance cardio health. As the heat rises, so does your heart rate. During your treatment, your heart rate can hit between 100 and 150 beats per minute, mimicking a moderate-intensity workout. Saunas can also improve blood flow, and several studies suggest that they can lower blood pressure in people with hypertension.
  • Saunas boost your metabolism, which means you burn more calories without more physical effort. That makes them a great complement to most weight-loss programs. They’re also perfect for people with chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia who need to limit their physical activity.
  • Saunas can help you manage pain by alleviating inflammation, reducing swelling and improving joint mobility.
  • Saunas improve the health of your skin. By enhancing your circulation, they move more nutrients to the surface of your skin. Meanwhile, sweating sloughs off dead skin cells and removes impurities.
  • Saunas promote detoxification. Research shows that saunas can reduce the chemical load of the body.

At Healing Path, we have an infrared sauna, rather than the traditional steam saunas that are more common in Finland and in many gyms and spas here in North America.

Infrared saunas use heaters that emit warming infrared light. They are even more effective than traditional saunas at detoxifying your body and improving recovery after endurance training. On top of that, infrared saunas aren’t as humid as steam saunas, and you don’t need to crank up the heat as high to achieve the same benefits.
