Nestle, “the world’s largest food and beverage company”, recently sealed a deal to buy Atrium Innovations, a major Canadian nutritional supplements maker. This is concerning to us, as it includes several of the brands we carry in our dispensary and frequently prescribe.
Nestle has a long history of unethical business practices that are incongruent with our business values at Healing Path. For decades, Nestle has consistently shown a lack of social and environmental corporate responsibility. The company famously was the target of an international boycott in the 1970’s and 80’s, because of their infant formula marketing and sales to low-income countries — a practice that arguably still continues today.
We are also decidedly skeptical that a large multinational like Nestle will continue Atrium’s commitment to the quality and care necessary for designing and manufacturing good health products. As a result, we have joined the growing group of naturopaths boycotting Atrium Innovations.
What does this mean for our patients?
We are phasing out all of the Douglas Labs, Genestra, Seroyal, and Pure Encapsulations products. These are products we have been prescribing and dispensing since we became naturopaths in 2006. If you have supplements purchased from our clinic, it is likely you have one of these brands.
We are committed to providing you with high quality supplements and will continue to do so. We have been able to source most of the products with the same ingredients and quality as those we have carried so far. When it comes time to refill your prescriptions, we will advise you on new products to take instead.
Don’t like change?
Neither do we. But we feel this is an important one. And we are welcoming it as a chance to revamp our product line and discover great new products. And if you would rather not make the change, don’t worry. We will help you source the products elsewhere.
If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please don’t hesitate to let us know.
